Hazel Atlas Glass Company Mugs

I have to say that when we first started collecting glassware and mugs, Hazel Atlas really confused us. For one, the most common Hazel Atlas stamp used on mugs is an "A" inside of an "H" - switch those letters around and you get AH = Anchor Hocking, another really famous glass maker that produced very similar pieces. This is a pretty inconvenient coincidence for those beginning out collecting - but is usually not a problem after the first 2 or 3 times you see the mark.

But the other problem we have with mugs from Hazel Atlas is that many are completely unmarked, except for a batch number. Other companies were usually pretty good about some sort of ID, but they seem to have quite a few mugs that have no information at all on the bottom.

The Hazel-Atlas Glass Company was founded in 1902 in Washington, Pennsylvania when 4 different companies merged (Hazel Glass and Metals, Atlas Glass, Wheeling Metal and Republic Glass). With headquarters in Wheeling, WV the company experienced explosive growth throughout the 30s when it had over 15 differnet plants around the country and was considered the largest glassmaker in the world.

The company is well known for its depression glass, and later patterned kitchenware and tableware. As far as mugs go, there are a lot of great examples to collect in different patterns and shapes. Hazel Atlas mugs appear to be fairly popular, greatly depending on what type of pattern or shape. But they do not have the enormous popularity that Fire King does which may offer saavy collectors a chance to pick up the less well-known examples.
