Taylor & Ng Mugs
About the Company/Brand:
Taylor & Ng were originally a San Francisco, CA based department store that sold crafts and kitchen related items. According to Wikipedia, it was founded in 1965 by Spaulding Taylor and Win Ng to showcase the latter's designs. Ceramic works like dinnerware and mugs were made along with a host of other items. The department store itself closed in 1985.
Today, a company with the same name exists as an online only store specializing in various types of kitchenware. It should be noted that this INCLUDES reproductions of various mug designs that the company has become known for by collectors. In particular, the "Animates" series, the "Vintage French" Animal series and the "Primitives" series featuring the original designs by Ng have all been reproduced and I believe ALL of them are made in China.
I think that you can tell the vintage mugs from the originals by the stamp on the bottom and possibly the construction material of the mug - but I'm not sure about it. I believe the older mugs, which were produced in Japan, are marked that way (albeit faintly) on the bottom. The one I have is indeed marked in this way.
