Pomegranate Franciscan - Mad About Mugs

I haven’t been able to find as much information on these Franciscan mugs from Gladding, McBean. One thing I have been able to discern is that they were produced around 1954 and that the pattern is called “Pomegranate“. This was a bit surprising since the pattern of brown and tan flowers and pomegranates seem to have a 1970s sort of feel to them. I believe this type of mug is part of a larger subset of dinnerware shape called “Eclipse” that was introduced 1954-1956. Other patterns in this shape included Plain White, Starburst (extremely popular, easily identified by it’s “Atomic” look), Oasis, and Duet. The shapes are all “futuristic” or Moderist look to them with rounded corners.

The pattern is printed on a speckled light beige or tan base color. The mug is actually very tall with a very large handle. It measures five inches tall and 2 3/4 inches across and is shaped like an elongated barrel with a smaller mouth. It holds quite a bit of coffee… the only bad thing is that it’s quite difficult to get your hand inside to wash it!

I believe in the catalogs this was a #1804. I’ve noticed that the mug that I have, along with several other Franciscan ones I’ve seen, has imperfections in the glaze and the backstamp. You can see above where the stamp almost seems to have smeared. When I first looked at it I thought that it had gotten scratched off or something. Closer inspection shows that happened before the glaze was set. It is marked “Franciscan Oven Safe Made In California U.S.A. Color-Safe Gladding McBean & Co”.
