Lipton Soup Square Glasbake Mug - Mad About Mugs

This is the second one of these mugs that I’ve come across so far - we also have a white mug besides this red-pink one. They are instantly recognizable because they are square - the first thing you’ll be thinking is: how in the world do you drink out of this without spilling? Well, they are actually from a promotion with Lipton Soup so they aren’t meant to drink out of. They are marked as Glasbake on the bottom.

Lipton Soup Square Glasbake Mug - Mad About Mugs

We’ve seen these mugs in many different colors - they’re quite reasonable usually but are great mugs. I was wondering what the original promotion was - like maybe you bought a couple of boxes of Lipton Soup and the you got to send in the proof of purchases in order to get the mug?

I saw an auction the other day where they had what they said was a boxed set of six different mugs in white, light pink, yellow, light blue, light green, and the darker pink/red color that we have. They said the date on the box was 1960, so I’ll assume they were produced near that time - still no idea if they were only sold in sets or as single mugs as well.

Ours actually is marked with a number as well: J-2265. I have no idea about the Glasbake numbering system though.
