Checkerboard and Flowers

Another couple of mugs that are the Japanese stacking variety with the “two-finger” handles. These are actually mold marked on the bottom as “Japan” and what looks like “S.I” in a circle? I forgot to take a picture of it. The pattern is a dark brown and yellow checkerboard pattern with white flowers on top of it. I wish I knew what company made these, or if it was several companies who all used the same design. They do seem to be fairly common - I’ve no idea on when it was producecd as well.

Mikasa - Pastelle Orange Mugs

Mikasa Mad About Mugs

Found these great Mikasa Pastelle mugs the other day. They actually look a bit yellowish in the pictures, but the orange is actually a solid color as seen below on the picture of backstamp. Don’t know too much about these. The handles are white and squarish. They are marked with the line name and D6200 Japan on the back. When I was at the thrift there were also plates and bowls that matched but I didn’t get those.

Fire King Orange Flower mug - Mad About Mugs

I’ve seen this flower pattern on Fire King stacking mugs sometimes referred to as the “Daybreakers” or “Day Breaker” pattern. I’m not yet 100% sure if that’s the true name or not. There’s various colors and flowers for this pattern - but all are similar in that there is a single flower, viewed from the top, and there are 4 green leaf clusters surrounding the flower at each diagonal.

Unknown Japanese Flower Espresso Mug

This is a very interesting little tall mug or cup with an elongated handle. It’s marked simply as “Japan” on the bottom and measures 4 inches tall and only 2 inches in diameter. There’s a nice pattern of flowers in white, red and yellow with an orange background printed all around the mug. We were trying to figure out what this style of mug might be used for - it could be an espresso mug but it’s so tall.

Corning Pyrex - Flamingo Tea Cup

Corning Pyrex Restaurant Ware Flamingo Tea Cup

This is our first piece of Pyrex Flamingo tableware from Corning - it’s not really a mug, but more of a tea cup. Thank you to Merebearlandon for sending it to us! Ours is not marked with a stamp, but these usually did have a gold stamp on the bottom that often wore off (we have a number of other pieces where the stamp did wear off as well). These sometimes also came with gold trim around the edges, though ours does not appear to have it.

Canada Goose Fire King Mug - Mad About Mugs

These wonderful depictions of game birds on Anchor Hocking Fire King D-Handle style mugs date from approximately 1959-1962. While they’re fairly common they enjoy some popularity with Fire King mug collectors because there are 4 different birds to collect in the set: Canada Goose, Ring Necked Pheasnt, Mallard Duck and Ruffled Grouse. Shown here is an example of the Canada Goose Mug.

Hazel Atlas - Egg Nog Mugs

Hazel Atlas Egg Nog Mugs - Mad About Mugs

These great little egg nog cups or mugs were made by Hazel Atlas and are very similar to the popular Tom and Jerry mugs. They originally came in sets of either 6, 10 or 12 (difficult to tell unless someone has an original box with the number of cups) and a large serving bowl for the egg nog.

These little 3 inch cups are footed, though I’ve seen others that are not footed. Those also seem to have the red and green reverse. The ones I have have the words “Egg Nog” in green, but the others have the same writing in red? The rest of the scene features an old victorian town with a horse and carriage in red.

Unknown - Xmas, Japanese Stacking Mug

Japanese Xmas Stacking Mug

Picked up some of these great Christmas scene mugs the other day - I believe they came in sets of four but they only had these two. Both feature red, green and black holiday pictures around the sides of the mug. Mug 1 has a tree, town with a boy ringing a bell, a red friendship type dove, a white bird and red bells and holly. Mug 2 has poinsettias, an xmas tree, candles, a cherub with wings and more pointsettias.

We don’t know the maker of these mugs, but it is a stacking shape that is commonly seen. We believe it’s not extremely old, but definitely not a newer style of mug. Maybe 70s-80s? The “stacking” part of the mug on the bottom has ridges and the handle is an interesting two finger grip that fits my fingers perfectly. It is rather thin, and I’ve seen quite a few that have cracked or broken handles.

The mug has “Japan” stamped very faintly into the porcelain on the bottom. There’s a noticeable amount of imperfections (not wear) both in the paint and in the composition of the china itself.

Stetson / Marcrest - Swiss Chalet Cup

Stetson / Marcrest - Swiss Chalet Mug - Mad About Mugs

Picked up this wonderful cup in the Swiss Chalet pattern the other day. I actually held off getting it for months, because it was a bit too expensive for what I thought was an unknown maker (it is not marked with a company on the bottom). Turns out it was made by Stetson China Co. and distributed by Marshall Burns as Marcrest. We have matching Fire King items in this pattern. They also had a creamer and sugar at the thrift long ago, but it was gone before I came to my senses and bought the cup.

Hazel Atlas Tom and Jerry Auld Lang Syne Lyric - Mad About Mugs

The title pretty much says it all… these tiny mugs or cups measure 3 inches tall and 2 3/4 inches wide. They feature the popular Tom and Jerry (no, not the cat and mouse) characters with top hats drinking up the holiday eggnog on one side. The other side has the lyrics and music to Auld Lang Syne. I never know what to call this style of mug, it could possible be a punch or egg-nog cup. The handle is that rectangular style that I see on Hazel Atlas frequently.

Interestingly, we picked up two of them, and one had an original sticker on it - 29 cents! That’s sticker shock if I ever saw it. =) I’ve no idea on the date of manufacture on these guys.
